Gokarna: It has a famous temple of Shiva by name Mahabaleshwar. Holy epics of Hindus has a story behind the twisted Shivalinga at this place. Ravana, the King of ancient Lanka, pleased Lord Shiva with his great penance. Shiva gave his Atmalinga to Ravana. He advised Ravana not to place it anywhere in between when he took it back to Lanka. But as it was evening time, Ravana had to take a pause in between for Sandhyavandan or evening prayers. He had to find a person to hold the shivalinga there. Lord Ganesh, Shiva's son was in disguise as a cowherd gazing at him nearby. Ravana told him to hold it until he finished his prayers. Ganesh warned him that he should come and take the lingam before he calls him three times. Ravana agreed and went for prayers. But he could not return in time. Ganesh had kept the lingam on the ground there. He struck very hard on the mid portion of Ganesha's head. A Ganesh idol with a small concave curve is still standing as a statue at Gokarna. When Ravana tried to remove the lingam by force, from the ground, it exploded and got twisted. Pieces were thrown off to far off places like Murdeshwar, Sadashiva temple at Surathkal, Sajjeshwara, Guneshwara, Dhareshwara etc.

Lord Ganesh, Shiva's son was in disguise as a cowherd gazing at him nearby. Ravana told him to hold it until he finished his prayers. Ganesh warned him that he should come and take the lingam before he calls him three times. Ravana agreed and went for prayers. But he could not return in time. Ganesh had kept the lingam on the ground there. He struck very hard on the mid portion of Ganesha's head. A Ganesh idol with a small concave curve is still standing as a statue at Gokarna. When Ravana tried to remove the lingam by force, from the ground, it exploded and got twisted. Pieces were thrown off to far off places like Murdeshwar, Sadashiva temple at Surathkal, Sajjeshwara, Guneshwara, Dhareshwara etc.
