Air cargo operations started from May 1st 2013. In the beginning 1.5 tonnes of cargo is carried by passenger planes. The cargo complex has a capacity to handle 100 tonnes of cargo.

On 28th August 2013, the Mangalore international airport
started exporting fish to Kuwait. The popular variety of silver pomfrets was
exported in 12 packets to the tiny Middle East nation. The packets weighed 45kg
each. Exporting process was well handled by the air cargo complex which is in the
old terminal of Bajpe airport.
Nearest island airport to the south indian city is
Agatti airport located in Lakshadweep Islands (permission from government at Kochi city in Kerala state
is needed). Lakshadweep islands are located
144 nautical miles from Mangalore by sea. There are flights to the island only
from Kochi and
