The Bajpe airport was opened for flights to operate since 25th December 1951. International flights started operating from 3rd October 2006. Kozhikode and Lengpui airports are similar with table top runways, and location on top of the hill.

In a week, more than 20 flights take off from the airport carrying more than 7,500 passengers every week. Mangalore international airport can handle aircraft up to A310 size in all weather conditions. There is permission for operations during the night time too.

Air cargo operations started from May 1st 2013. In the beginning 1.5 tonnes of cargo is carried by passenger planes. The cargo complex has a capacity to handle 100 tonnes of cargo.


On 28th August 2013, the Mangalore international airport started exporting fish to Kuwait. The popular variety of silver pomfrets was exported in 12 packets to the tiny Middle East nation. The packets weighed 45kg each. Exporting process was well handled by the air cargo complex which is in the old terminal of Bajpe airport.
Nearest island airport to the south indian city is Agatti airport located in Lakshadweep Islands (permission from government at Kochi city in Kerala state is needed). Lakshadweep islands are located 144 nautical miles from Mangalore by sea. There are flights to the island only from Kochi and it takes just one and a half hours by flight.
